Title: SNIP 'n CUT
Description: what to take out and what to keep in
RYSTAR*18 - February 21, 2010 07:47 PM (GMT)
Okay, so what do you guys think we should keep in the movie (important events) and what to take out (unimportant events). In movies like "The Lightning Thief" ,"Cirque Du Freak" and "Eragon", they cut out so much from the books. Some things they cut I notice are unreasonable and and could easily be put in the movie to help it stay true to the book. To prevent idiot directors from ruining the series, write what you think would make sense to put in and take out.

I know what you mean. In the next couple of days I'm going to have to sit down and take notes on the entire book. And outline the events. Basically breaking them up into the 'Scene Selection' you would see on a DVD menu. And most likely, there will be too many scenes, so then comes the editing process. Cutting out things that can be left from the story.
(We can leave out things that don't have a huge impact on events in the later books)

Yes, sounds good. The hard part is taking events out. I think that way because most of the things I've read in the books, I notice D.J. writes mostly impotant scenes that WILL have an impact on the series. We are probably going to have to change the storyline a bit. Not drastically of course, seeing as we don't want to anger any fans or ourselves for that matter.
Saint Kane - March 3, 2010 12:48 AM (GMT)
I agree. And it's a very difficult thing for a true fan to deal with when trying to adapt a book. The key is to find portions of the story that you wouldn't mind losing, and that will go unnoticed when they are cut out.
Example: Tom Bombadil in The Fellowship of the Ring. It was a section of the book that was not relevant to the storyline. He had little effect on the characters' journey and nothing that happened in that scene affected the outcome of any other portion of the story.
So if we stumble across something in the books that seems like "wait, why did we need to know this?", that's what we get rid of.

First I'd like to say, the director is not the person who ruins the movie (not in the way you are talking about I mean) that would be the fault of the producer and/or the screenwriter.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. In book four, the western sequence is unnecessary. I guarantee you that if a movie is made, no matter what, it will get cut.
I'll try and think of other things. I need to listen to the audio books again (that's how I really get familiar with the plot).
The books really aren't that long until you get to book five though, it's kinda like Harry Potter, except until book four. The earlier books in Harry Potter weren't terribly long, and so not much at all was cut out (admittedly the second one did have a large, but it was a dense (not long) book amount of deleted scenes. By dense I mean a lot happens in a relatively short amount of time.
And I should say, I don't think Tom Bombadil was irrelevant, it was just unnecessary. I mean, he wasn't just randomly stuck in there, his purpose was to introduce the idea of industry destroying nature which is one of the main themes. But Treebeard and actually seeing what Isengard does to Fanghorn Forest basically achieves the same purpose, making him unnecessary.

Yeah, screen writer is what I meant. That happens to me a lot, I get stuff mixed up without noticing. Sorry for that confusion. And yes the western illusion will be cut. It's one of the few things that are'nt important to the series.
Saint Kane - March 16, 2010 01:13 AM (GMT)
Well, depending on the director, they may have as much to do with the writing process. In which case they'd be credited as a writer as well, like Peter Jackson.
I'll look through that scene when I get to Book 4, but I'm not sure it will have to be cut out. Then again, of all the sequences that happen in Lifelight, it is the least relevant. Could go straight from Bobby's old life flashbacks to the Barbican.
RYSTAR*18 - March 19, 2010 10:33 PM (GMT)
One of the lifelight I think specifically should stay, would be the basketball game scene. It really shows how captivating lifelight can be and how it can manipulate you.
Saint Kane - March 20, 2010 04:06 AM (GMT)
The stuff that reminds him of his old life should be kept.
It will be like a dream sequence. Kinda blurred edges to everything. Up until he realizes that it's a Lifelight jump.

I don't really think that when Aja, Evangeline, and bobby have gloid is a particularly important scene, except in the fact that is where he finds out that she is the acolyte. that can easily be relocated.
Saint Kane - April 22, 2010 07:50 AM (GMT)
True, but I'm of the opinion that cuts should be made AFTER a fuller script is written. And her namesake is D.J.'s wife. :P Can't be too much addition for that book. I don't think a lot goes on really.
Helios had an outline of it somewhere. Just for RB, which I'd like to get for other books as well. Key plot points. But we'll focus on casts and descriptions first.

Eh, When I was doing a script frenzy of twilight the musical- don't ask, please- I didn't make any cuts before, and I didn't even finish yet, and am nearing 150 pages. Still 100+ pages from the end of the book.

Hey, would anyone be opposed to cutting out the Bobby/Loor romance of book 6? I always felt it was unnecessary and kind of slowed down book 6.
Saint Kane - May 1, 2010 07:58 PM (GMT)
It's possible, but then again, love stories are crowd pleasers, and it's an element that Pendragon somewhat lacks.
alkaria~vs~cloral - May 2, 2010 12:03 AM (GMT)
I think we should keep it in, just not elaborate.
LaBerge's girl - May 2, 2010 12:11 AM (GMT)
I would like to see it kept in there.
You can see throughout the books, leading up to the RoZ, that Bobby begins to develop feelings for Loor. I think it would be important to keep that aspect of the story in there, you know?
It doesn't have to be big or anything. It wasn't a HUGE part of the book, obviously, but I do think it would be nice to have that little bit included.
Exie27 - May 2, 2010 12:50 AM (GMT)
I was just thinking that I'd like to see one action/adventure flick that doesn't have some sort of romance thrown all over it. I mean, obviously we'll need to keep Bobby and Courtney together, but that eventually grew to something deeper than just a romance aspect of the story...
Saint Kane - May 2, 2010 01:06 AM (GMT)
True, and I mean, Lord of the Rings was an action flick, but the Aragorn-Arwen and Aragorn-Eowyn dynamics were still very present and crowd pleasing.
EDIT: I do think that if/when it does happen, like Loor wearing the red dress and stuff... it would be great to have the voiceover "Man, she looked hot!"
Exie27 - May 3, 2010 03:11 PM (GMT)
I'd especially like to cut out the "kiss scene." The whole part there was awkward and, in my opinion, boring. I mean, Pendragon will still have the Bobby/Courtney aspect, I don't see why we need to make it a triangle. I mean, Bobby is still going to think Loor is a beautiful, strong woman (that's kind of important to both their character development, as well as the development of their friendship), he just shouldn't try to plant one on her.
