Title: Saint Dane: The Costume

Explain. Do you want to talk about what his costume is...cause that's piece of cake. A dark gray suit. I don't have the MoD to look up the details so ya...
alkaria~vs~cloral - May 16, 2009 01:01 PM (GMT)
actually, i think it was more of a black suit, but dark gray is pretty close.
Saint Danez Acolyte - May 16, 2009 04:32 PM (GMT)
That's what I thought but I have a faint memory of them saying dark gray. Maybe not.
sjk - June 6, 2009 11:19 PM (GMT)
This is the closest thing I've found. It's a Nehru suit from India. (Which, for the record, is in Asia).
Saint Danez Acolyte - June 7, 2009 04:51 PM (GMT)
Saint Kane - June 22, 2009 01:41 AM (GMT)
Uhhhh... No.
And yes, that picture is almost perfect. I think I took some pictures of myself in my own SD clothing, but I don't know where I put them.
sjk - June 22, 2009 08:52 AM (GMT)
I'm thinking make it button up to the neck, and take off the white trim at the cuffs and we're in business.
Do you think he wears gloves?
Saint Kane - June 26, 2009 05:15 AM (GMT)
Nah. No gloves.
Just wrinkly old-man hands. Probably overgrown fingernails. :P
Ela - June 26, 2009 07:06 AM (GMT)
Obviously he doesn't have wrinkly old hands OR overgrown fingernails, but brushing that joke aside...
Think of a nehru inspired suit, but with a beautifully tailored fit, evocative of an SS uniform, and a leg flattering boot cut or flare beginning at the knee. Gorgeous cut for long legs, in my opinion. Shiny patent leather shoes, too - no less.

"His clothes changed from the khaki brown cop uniform, to an all-black suit that vaguely reminded me of the Far East." - The Merchant of Death, pg. 28.

I actually used to picture him with black combat boots, but I think that's going a little too far. You're thinking of a combination between the Nehru and this then?\

Saint Danez Acolyte - June 29, 2009 12:18 AM (GMT)
It is just a tux! He isn't Chinese and isn't going to the freaking army!
Ela - June 29, 2009 06:11 AM (GMT)
I always liked the combat boots idea, and I'm open to that as well. So yes, more or less a blend of Nazi and zen.
Also to SD's Acolyte... he NEVER is described as wearing a tux. At all. Either quote a reference or stop insisting upon it, because it simply isn't his costume. Multiple times, Bobby says explicitly a BLACK, ASIAN LOOKING suit.
Saint Danez Acolyte - June 29, 2009 01:40 PM (GMT)
Combat boots? Fine, I'll find it.

Asian-looking suit. Do you even know what a tuxedo looks like? Why on earth (or any other territory) would Saint Dane wear a tuxedo? I don't think his suit would look anything military. More sage-like, or "saint-like".

http://images.buycostumes.com/mgen/merchandiser/20759.jpgClearly SD wouldn't look anything like this DORK. But if the suit were black velvet and didn't look as though it'd been had by leaf-cutter ants...

[Post separated for number of images.
]On a more military note, this was returned in the 'nehru jacket' search:

Slightly too distinguished and european looking.
In terms of fuctionality (i.e. battle-readiness), the fight with Bobby on Zadaa would work great in this, which is Asian-looking.

that black suit looks perfect.the way the manis moving tells me its good for combat and being calm and rlaxed just like saint dane acts when hes cocky.
Helios-Maximus - August 21, 2009 02:58 PM (GMT)
Ok, I saw something once that was almost perfect. Some time soon I can get you a picture or I can draw it myself. It is slightly different from the book. There is the asian suit, but I think a black trench coat should be over that. Trust me, it works visually. I can show you examples.
RYSTAR*18 - August 21, 2009 05:24 PM (GMT)
Helios-Maximus - August 21, 2009 05:48 PM (GMT)
I actually already drew it, and a picture of it is on my camera. On Sunday night I can get the cord and get it to my computer to upload
Helios-Maximus - August 22, 2009 01:11 AM (GMT)
This is the idea I had with the asian suit with a trench coat over it. I did a quick sketch of it.

This isn't exactly a perfect copy of it. But I found a cord to use for my camera. And one can at least get the general idea of what I meant.
Also, the costume would be black with maybe silver details.
RYSTAR*18 - August 25, 2009 06:46 PM (GMT)
cool,it looks like it could work really well.
Helios-Maximus - September 1, 2009 04:14 AM (GMT)
Helios-Maximus - September 16, 2009 03:40 AM (GMT)
I thought I could give another example, this is from Fullmetal Alchemist, the guy in the black suit has a costume similar to how I imagined Saint Dane.

There you go.
RYSTAR*18 - September 19, 2009 05:04 PM (GMT)
ummm...
i don't know,it has flaws that i don't think could work at all.it could fit ,but i have doubts.
Helios-Maximus - September 21, 2009 04:44 AM (GMT)
What kinds of flaws?
If it means anything, I wasn't talking about the guy's face, head, hairstyle etc., just his cloths, and I wasn't talking about the torn sleeve, that would be intact; and no claw, cause Saint Dane doesn't have claws.
RYSTAR*18 - September 24, 2009 10:39 PM (GMT)
i don't know why but,it looks a little churchy to me.i think i just couldn't imagine it for saint dane because it was in cartoon form, sorry.
Helios-Maximus - October 16, 2009 01:44 AM (GMT)
no need to apologize, I'm hard to offend, I just like to hear other people's opinions, the main thing that makes an "Asian" suit different from ours is that they have suits that button up all the way, and then the collar sticks up.
I see the churchyness that you speak of. Personally, it doesn't bother me, but that may be because I have always viewed Saint Dane as someone who likes irony, so making him look like a priest would go along with that. (I mean he's names 'Saint')
Anyway.
RYSTAR*18 - October 17, 2009 04:23 PM (GMT)
lol.i guess that could work with the irony and all.
Helios-Maximus - October 18, 2009 04:30 AM (GMT)
Perhaps, it's just a strain of thought I had. Just so you know, often when I give a long opinion, it's usually because I'm considering everything right then and I just try to present how I feel about all the choices. Anyway, latuh!
Saint Kane - December 6, 2009 05:46 PM (GMT)
I agree completely, though a trench coat isn't really mentioned. The suit beneath seems right though. A coat over his costume might take away some of the elegance.
Very nice work though, definitely something to consider.
Helios-Maximus - December 7, 2009 12:14 AM (GMT)
Thank you, The elegance you mentioned is something I hadn't considered into that, I always thought of Saint Dane as having a lot of presence, and I thought a long coat would help that. But you are right, he does have a factor of elegance in his personality. I'll see what I can do.
Saint Kane - December 8, 2009 10:38 AM (GMT)
A loose robe at some point perhaps, but otherwise...
Helios-Maximus - August 25, 2010 03:51 AM (GMT)
I like this one too.
deviantart linkThis just kinda has the presence I was talking about
LaBerge's girl - August 25, 2010 03:53 AM (GMT)
Very nice. Like Kane said, a trench coat was never mentioned in the books but looking at this I must say, it does look quite "powerful."
Saint Kane - August 27, 2010 05:21 PM (GMT)
I have a thought. How about a sort of trench coat of black smoke? So that it's not an actual part of his wardrobe, but can at some times be on him, sort of half formed, but with smoke billowing out behind him rather than fabric.
And maybe during a spurt of anger the smoke tears away from him, leaving his normal suit, then settles back around him as he calms down.
On the other hand, this sort of suit has the same asian look but also with some flowing movement toward the bottom, a robe effect.

I think his costume may evolve over the course of 10 movies. Anything otherwise would just be lazy on the part of the... art director or one of the directors. Something new each time.
So for a sort of 'costume schedule':
MoD -
Standard black nehru suitLCoF - Same suit
NW - Some modification with a 1930s feel. A black bellhop suit perhaps? :D (no monkey hat) Or trenchcoat here?
RB - Something sleek/phader-like? Introduce the jacket?
BW - He has now become bald. And perhaps asian + coat + tattering + junglestyle
RoZ - Hmm. SD sleeveless? I mean putting the actor in the desert in full black garb is just cruel. There is also the fight scene at the end where the Neo design might be cool. Or the
Darth Maul desert-garb, because baldy with exposed arms means sunburns and stuff.
QG - I need to re-read this one, and most of them. The original with some kind of modification?
PoR - A spinoff of the Reality Bug design.
RR - Something chaotic, he's almost mad with power at this point, and everything is falling into his lap. He should almost appear disheveled or out of order, which gives his SoH appearance more contrast.
SoH - Youthful. Black hair. Disney Prince costume. Bright red jacket for the upper body, black legs, probably white gloves or something. And I think as he is decaying at the end his clothes should fade to grey and shrivel.
Nevva and Saint Dane? More military feel, but that jacket is a start.
LaBerge's girl - August 27, 2010 05:59 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that might be kind of cool. Almost like spicing his outfit up a bit so it corresponds with the environment and where he is. As much as I do like his original suit, I wouldn't really be against the idea. The audience might like seeing him come back and think, "Hmm...he's dressed differently."
It doesn't even have to be a huge change, something even minor and just enough to make his suit a little "different."
Unwound Midnight - August 27, 2010 07:02 PM (GMT)
NW.... I kinda want to see him in a Frank Sinatra Ratpack suit....

It's just a really classic look.... Very chic.
